Meet The Speakers

  • David Fifer - Keynote Speaker

    David Fifer is an Assistant Professor of Emergency Medical Care at Eastern Kentucky University. A 23 year veteran of EMS, he was worked in multiple roles and practice settings, from line-level Firefighter/Paramedic to ED Tech to agency director. For the past 9 years, he's been a Paramedic with Powell County Ambulance Service and serves on numerous state-level committees and work groups. He is a member of the Board of Directors of the Appalachian Center for Wilderness Medicine who teaches and speaks about wilderness medicine throughout the world, and is the founding coordinator of the RedSTAR wilderness EMS unit in Kentucky's Red River Gorge. He also serves as the nationwide representative of EMS Practitioners to NEMSAC, and is a Rescue Specialist for the Kentucky State Police Air Rescue program.

    David earned his B.A. in Political Science and M.S. in Safety, Security, and Emergency Management from EKU, holds the Certified Wilderness Paramedic credential from the International Board of Speciality Certifications, and is a Fellow in the Academy of Wilderness Medicine.

  • Dr. Bill Young

    Dr. Bill Young

    Bill Young has worked in emergency medical services since 1978. He began his career running calls for a small fire department near Williamsburg, Kentucky long before the term “first responder” existed. Young has worked as a street medic, training officer, supervisor, state regulator, and educator.

    He attended Cumberland College (now University of the Cumberlands) and earned a master’s degree in leadership from Regis University. He earned his doctorate degree in educational psychology.

  • Jason Grady

    Jason Grady is the System Manager of Emergency Cardiac Care for Northside Hospital. He obtained his Paramedic Technology degree from Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center. Jason coordinates the care, data, and reporting of patients with STEMI, out-of-hospital cardiac arrest, and cardiogenic shock from first medical contact to definitive treatment for the Northside Hospital System and has been involved in implementing and coordinating large, comprehensive STEMI/OHCA systems. His interests include STEMI, cardiogenic shock, and resuscitation science. Jason and his wife Juley live in Flowery Branch, GA, and are the parents of 9 awesome children.

  • Samantha Johnson

    (Sam) Samantha is a Senior Associate General Counsel for Grady Health System and devotes a substantial portion of her time to advising, educating, and representing the hospital-based EMS division, which provides 911 emergency, specialty transport, mobile integrated healthcare, psychiatric/crisis response, and disaster response to Atlanta, South Fulton and numerous additional Georgia counties. Samantha is a graduate of Georgia State University College of Law (J.D., 2003) and the J. Mack Robinson College of Business (MBA and MHA, 2014). She is an accomplished speaker, author, and is the co-host of FlightBridgeED, LLC’s “The Standard of Care” Podcast, focusing on legal issues in EMS.
